A doula is a trained professional who provides expert guidance for individuals going through labor and childbirth. A doula coaches a laboring person and their partner through the birth process.  A doula provides non-medical support emotionally and physically to the laboring person and their partner during pregnancy, labor, birth and immediate post-partum.  Doulas will educate the laboring person and their partner on what to expect during the labor process, as well as coaching them on how to all work together during contractions and apply any coping techniques needed.  Doulas are well versed in different comfort measures including but not limited to different laboring positions, massages, distraction techniques, and meditation.  Doulas do not replace the partner but rather coach them on how to best help the laboring person.
